Cities of Fairway, Roeland Park, and Westwood Announce Conclusion of Northeast Johnson County Fireworks Display
The Cities of Fairway, Roeland Park, and Westwood jointly announce that the Northeast Johnson County Fireworks Display will not take place in 2026.
For nearly two decades, the annual fireworks display has been launched from the baseball field at Bishop Miege High School. Bishop Miege has shared plans to install synthetic turf on the baseball field in the coming months. As such, the field will no longer be available as a fireworks launch site.
In advance of this decision, the three cities worked collaboratively to explore alternative locations within their respective city limits that could safely and effectively accommodate a fireworks display of similar size and scope. After careful review, no existing open space met the minimum safety, logistical, and operational requirements necessary to host the event. The cities will continue to investigate potential for partnerships with other northeast Johnson County cities to create a new 4th of July celebration. We will update our residents on any progress on these cooperative efforts.
“The Northeast Johnson County Fireworks Display has been a valued community tradition for many years,” the cities shared in a joint statement. “While we explored all reasonable options, there is no viable location that allows the event to continue in its current format.”
The Cities of Fairway, Roeland Park, and Westwood extend their sincere appreciation to Bishop Miege High School and the Archdiocese of Kansas City for their partnership and generosity in hosting the fireworks display for nearly 20 years. Their support made the event possible and created lasting memories for residents throughout the community.
The cities also wish to recognize and thank the Cities of Mission Woods and Westwood Hills for their continued support and financial contributions to the event over the years.
